Star Fox’s free Switch 2 update makes Battle Mode a four-player hangout
October 2, 2026

Nintendo’s free September update adds three Battle Mode stages, four-player split-screen and team play online from a single Switch 2.

A free update has given Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 a much bigger reason to gather friends around the console. Nintendo Canada says the update is available now, adding three Battle Mode stages, local split-screen for up to four players, and team play online from one Switch 2. The official Canadian announcement dates the release to September 29, 2026.
Three new places to fight
The headline addition is a trio of Battle Mode stages: Katina, Sector X and Venom. Nintendo describes them as objective-driven arenas, giving returning pilots new spaces to learn rather than simply repeating the launch maps.
Nintendo Life’s patch-note roundup also reports new battle items and confirms that the update is version 1.2.0. That makes the update feel like a genuine multiplayer expansion, not just a balance pass, while keeping the content free for owners of the game.
A single console can host the crew
Battle Mode now supports up to four players in local split-screen on one Nintendo Switch 2. Each player needs a controller, and Nintendo notes that Joy-Con 2 or compatible Joy-Con controllers can be used horizontally, which lowers the barrier for a spontaneous living-room match.
The separate Nintendo Support guide explains that private online battles can still reach eight players, while GameShare lets up to four people join through one host system. Those are useful distinctions when planning a match with friends who own different setups.
What Switch 2 owners should know
The update is exclusive to the Switch 2 version, and online play still depends on an internet connection and the applicable Nintendo Switch Online service. Nintendo also cautions that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer, so a full four-player setup may mean bringing extra controllers to the couch.
Nintendo’s Canadian store lists the digital version at $69.99 CAD. The game itself is built around a modernized take on the Star Fox 64 story, but this free update is the clearest practical reason for an owner who finished the campaign to return: there are new objectives, new arenas and a lower-friction way to play with a group.
