Monster Hunter Wilds’ free Switch 2 prologue demo arrives October 19
October 16, 2026
Monster Hunter Wilds arrives on Switch 2 this December. Its free prologue demo supports local play and save transfer, but not online hunts.

A free first hunt starts October 19
Capcom will bring a free prologue demo for Monster Hunter Wilds to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 19. In its official Monster Hunter account announcement, the publisher says the trial covers the start of the adventure. The Pacific-time date means Canadian players can look for it on Monday, October 19; the post gives October 20 as the UK’s British Summer Time date.
The timing gives players several weeks to test the Switch 2 version before the complete game launches on December 4. Nintendo’s Canadian store page lists the game for that date at C$54.99, so the demo offers a no-cost first look before the full purchase. As with any digital release, the eShop listing is the place to confirm availability on launch day.
Your progress is meant to carry forward
The useful part of a prologue demo is that it is more than a disposable sample: Capcom says players can carry their save data into the full game. That gives anyone who decides to buy the December release a way to continue from the opening rather than restart, though Capcom has not detailed every item or milestone that transfers in its short announcement.
Nintendo Canada’s listing describes the full game as a one-player experience on a single system, with support for one to four players online or over local wireless. That context matters because the demo’s multiplayer options are narrower than the finished release; it is best understood as a preview of the opening, not a complete test of every mode.
Local hunts work; online play does not
The demo does support local play, according to Capcom’s announcement. That means nearby Switch 2 players can try the opening together, a useful option for friends or family who can meet in person. A Nintendo Life report, which reproduces the announcement’s fine print, says online multiplayer is unavailable in the demo.
That distinction is worth knowing before planning a session: local wireless is not the same as inviting a friend who is far away. Nintendo’s Canadian product page lists online and local wireless multiplayer for the full game, while the demo keeps its multiplayer local. For this short trial, the practical choice is to play solo or arrange a nearby group.

A demo and pre-orders share a date
Digital pre-orders for the full Switch 2 release are set to open on the same day as the demo, according to the announcement relayed by Nintendo Wire. That lets players try the opening before deciding whether to reserve a copy, rather than asking them to commit based only on trailers. Nintendo Canada currently lists the digital game at C$54.99, but check the store again on October 19 for the live preorder details.
For Canadian players, the key dates are straightforward: the free trial is scheduled for October 19, digital pre-orders are expected to open alongside it, and the complete game follows on December 4. The demo’s transferable save and local multiplayer make it a meaningful preview, while the missing online mode sets a clear limit on what it can demonstrate.
